Can straws be dangerous?
I have got an email from friend and like you to know about it. I don't know if straws are dangerous.
Dangerous secret in the colored straws
Posted Feb 16, 2008 by Hannie
Horrible story of mine goes back to year 2005 March.
I ordered a Club Sandwich and a Sprite in a restaurant somewhere in Manila . When I finished half of the sandwich I sipped a sprite. But it didnt taste like an ordinary sprite I used to drink. So I sipped once more, but it still tasted the same. It tasted like a sprite mixed with some kind of oil. I called the clerk and asked him if the sprite was expired. He said it was just delivered today. So I asked him to taste it. Then he also found that something was wrong with it.
Both of us were wondering for a while. Then I got to look inside the straw. There were a lot of tiny black round things that looked like eggs. So I cut the middle of the straw lengthwise to have a better look. Yuck. There were a lot of tiny black round things in it. I suppose they were eggs of cockroach. About 1000 eggs were there. Then I began to check all the other straws in the straws case one by one. Almost all of them contained black eggs that seemed to be either the cockroach eggs or excretions.
After the incident I began to check all the straws in the restaurants and fast food chains that I had gone to. Almost of all the straws contained the same black eggs. Especially the darker the colors of straws, the more black eggs were found. In black straws, extreme amount of black eggs were found.
It was found out that it's because the cockroaches live (hatch eggs and excrete) in the dark places.
<Research result>
* 80% or more restaurants in the malls use red or black colored straws .
SO NEXT TIME.... BE CAUTIOUS... CHECK THE STRAW BEFORE YOU PLACE IT INSIDE THE DRINKS.
That's why it is better to drink beer. You don't need a straw.

Is this an Urban Myth????
Oh well thought that after I rec'd it
x
GROSS. To think of bugs inside the straws... YUCK.
Tell me this is not really real. From now on only clear straws wrapped in clear cello. ick
Gross!! But I believe it. It is possible. First note where it was discovered. Philippines - not a country where you can expect high standards in anything. Secondly, yes, cockroaches and other insects prefer dark places to live and breed. And they go to bathroom wherever they live -- they don't have separate living room and bathroom.
Besides, cheap, colored straws may have dangerous chemicals in the paint. So it is better to stay away from colored straws.
That is sooooooooo creepy and scarry...MY KIDS ALWAYS USE COLORED STRAWS!!!! YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!
@ShobanSen - its best to take precaution. I will check before using them.
@ajhollis - yeah kids love using straws so best to check them whether its safe to use or not.
@tkperito - whether its true or not, is best to avoid it becoming reality.
@sarahsD - no idea just got this email forwarded by friends
@Sherryever - I had a look but couldn't find anything on any Urban Myth site, it is highly plausible tho and could see the merit in checking.
@Sherryever - caution is always good in everything. I have such a "thing" about dirty food. If I had found stuff in the straws I would have been frantic. I can live with the bugs around me, but in me? Not so much. I recently saw a report on the bacterial level found in public ice makers, you know like in McD and other fast food restaurants. Believe me, there was plenty of documented proof that compels me to NOT add ice to my drinks. OH yeah!! Thanks for the info and I will keep my eyes open, my straws clear, and my drinks iceless. lol
